Consume such soy products as tofu, miso, or soymilk daily. Laboratory experiments have found that supplementing the diet with soy foods reduces activity of the sympathetic nervous system, the system essential to the sensation of pain. Soy foods are most helpful in reducing chronic pain after nerve injury caused by accident, surgery, herpes, diabetes, cancer, or fibromyalgia.
If you suffer pain caused by an autoimmune disorder, reduce your intake of animal foods and eliminate all polyunsaturated vegetable oils, margarine, vegetable shortening, and products made with partially hydrogenated oils of any kind. Use olive oil as your main fat and increase your consumption of omega-3 fatty acids by eating oily fish (salmon, sardines, and herring) or flaxseeds. Increase your consumption of fruits and vegetables, and purchase organic produce whenever possible. Also, try eliminating foods that may trigger autoimmune reactions. Start by eliminating all dairy products for two months. If that does not help, experiment by eliminating wheat, corn , soy, sugar, and citrus fruits, one group at a time.
Take 300 to 600 milligrams of lipoic acid daily to relieve chronic muscle pain.
